Jessica McCarthy joined the Port Augusta Follow the Dream/Partnerships for Success in year 8 and continued her journey with the program to complete year 12 and obtain her SACE in 2012. As a year 11 student she did two school-based traineeships with the ANZ bank as well as maintaining a full study load a school. At the end of year 12 she was offered a position at the University of South Australia studying Nursing and the ANZ bank offered her a full time position. She declined both offers and took up a cadetship in Nursing at the Port Augusta Hospital. A normal week for Jessica in 2013 involves two days at the Hospital, two days part time at the ANZ bank and one day of study.
Jessica’s plans for the future are to complete her cadetship in enrolled nursing, then complete the study at University to become a registered nurse and onward to become a midwife.
“When you first meet this quiet, smiling young woman you never get a picture of exactly how hard working and focussed she is. She never showed any sign of stress in year 11 and 12 as she maintained at full study load, worked one day a week at the bank and also studied for her certificate in banking. I have little doubt of whatever she sets herself as a goal she will achieve,” Port Augusta Co-ordinator Stephen Carter said.
”I was glad for the opportunity to be part of Polly Farmer it me develop my confidence and a stronger vision of my career and life goals,” Jessica said.
