Launched in 2004, the Newman Follow the Dream program, known locally as Miyanu Mia, provides academic enrichment and career advice for approximately 30 students who attend Newman Senior High School.
The Centre is in a specially modified house a short walk from the High School that has generously been supplied by long-term sponsor BHP. Students are supported, mentored and challenged to be their very best. As well as focusing on academic achievement, the program also helps students to develop greater confidence, self-esteem and resilience. The dedicated Program Coordinator provides individualised student support and liaises with classroom teachers and families to ensure the best outcomes for students.
The program’s long-term relationship with BHP has developed and strengthened over many years. BHP employees regularly visit the Centre to deliver the ‘A Day in the Life’ series where engineers and other professionals discuss their careers, share their life journeys and provide advice on post-school pathways.
The Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation’s bus, shared with the nearby Martu Education Centre, takes students home each afternoon after their Follow The Dream session.
We are proud to have the continuing support of BHP and the Department of Education WA.
