The Wickham STEM Centre (also known locally as the Maths and Science Centre of Excellence) provides primary age Aboriginal students with engaging, hands-on activities with a heavy focus on STEM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). The centre makes many connections with the local area, linking the learning activities to the local context of Wickham. The centre encourages students to become the problem solvers of the future and consider pursuing careers in the field of maths and science.
In 2017, students at the centre achieved great success when they took part in the Western Australia Robocup Junior, achieving 2nd place in the rescue event and 4th place in dance.
The centre is located in the STEM Lab of Wickham Primary school, takes place on Monday and Thursday afternoons, and hosts approximately 25 students in Years 3 to 6. The learning content is provided by a dedicated Program Coordinator and team of specialist tutors.
Rio Tinto has proudly supported the program since it was established in 2012.
