Swan View Follow The Dream

Approximately 45 students in Years 7 to 12 participate in the Swan View Follow the Dream program. The program has operated in Swan View Senior High School school for over 15 years.

The program is delivered on-site in the Moorart Kadadjiny Aboriginal Student Centre and school library by a committed team of tutors who provide specialist tuition support and mentoring to Follow the Dream students.

In addition to academic support, course counselling and career advice, the program also focuses on leadership development and cultural awareness. Visits from Aboriginal elders and Aboriginal community members form an integral part of the program.

The program features regular guest speakers and past visitors include the Prime Minister of Australia Malcolm Turnbull, the Education Minister the Hon Simon Birmingham, the Minister for Indigenous Health and Aged Care the Hon Ken Wyatt, Miss NAIDOC 2016 Shelley Cable, and the Commissioner for Children and Young People Colin Pettit.

Excursions are an important aspect of the program and students have the opportunity to attend a variety of trips, including visits to universities and careers expos; performances by dance and theatre companies such as the Yirra Yaakin Aboriginal Theatre Company and Bangarra Dance Company; and reward camps to build a sense of belonging.

Our students are young leaders in the school community and regularly take on leadership roles at special school events and assemblies, including NAIDOC and Reconciliation Week.

Many Follow the Dream students are also members of the School Representative Council. In 2016 the Program was on the metropolitan advisory committee for the Commissioner for Children and Young People.

Swan View Follow the Dream students continue to spread their wings and many of our students have been selected for state wide, national and even international leadership programs. The students truly embody the school’s motto ‘Dream, Believe, Achieve’.
