The Follow The Dream program in Karratha is known locally as the Gumala Mirnuwarni Education Project (GMEP), which is derived from two Indigenous languages and translates as “Coming together to learn.”

GMEP was the very first Follow The Dream program established over two decades ago by the Graham (Polly) Farmer Foundation in partnership with Rio Tinto, Woodside and the WA Department of Education.
This inaugural program commenced in 1997 with 23 students from Karratha, Roebourne and Wickham. The model was so successful that it has since been rolled out across Australia, with nearly 1800 students enrolled today in 49 primary and programs.

Based at Karratha Senior High School for students in Years 7 – 12, the program provides after-school tutoring and mentoring, academic enrichment, career camps, cultural excursions and career pathway planning.
Students can attend the program up to four days per week and are supported by a team of specialist tutors who provide support across a range of curriculum areas.

The program maintains strong links to its community networks and receives regular visits from local supporters, including Rio Tinto, Woodside Energy Ltd and The Northwest Shelf Project Partners.
While maintaining a strong link to local employment opportunities, students are also exposed to the possibilities of university and other career pathways by specialist study programs and annual camps to Perth.
