The Wickham STEM Centre (also known locally as the Maths and Science Centre of Excellence) provides Aboriginal students in Years 4 to 6, with engaging, hands-on activities that focus on STEM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).

The centre is located in the STEM Lab of Wickham Primary school and operates on Monday and Thursday afternoons for around 20 – 25 students.

The learning content is provided by a dedicated Program Coordinator and team of specialist tutors. The centre makes many connections with the local area, linking the learning activities to the local context of Wickham. The centre encourages students to become the problem solvers of the future and consider pursuing careers in the field of maths and science.

Rio Tinto has supported the program since it was established in 2012.

With a focus on goal setting, pathway planning and meaningful reflection on progress and achievement, all students enrolled in the program at Belmont develop individualised learning plans that aspire to excellence.

Located on traditional Whadjuk Noongar land, the program supports students in years 7 to 12 attending Belmont City College, Como Secondary College and Kent Street Senior High School. Each student commits to a tutoring target of 30 hours per term and maintains a school attendance of over 90%. A focus on both ATAR and VET pathways allows for specialised tuition matched with each student’s needs.
